I was about 10 when my father gave me that piece of advice and it has stuck with me for over 30 years.

That was also the moment I went from wanting to be a paleontologist (aka. Dinosaur Scientist) when I grew up to deciding to become an entrepreneur.

So, I started my entrepreneurial journey at the ripe age of 11 selling kitchen and cleaning supplies door to door.

After high school, I started a carpet and window cleaning business.

Now, this is not the story of a born salesman. I was moderately good at it because I had done so much of it. 

But, I hated door-knocking, cold calling, and every other form of cold outreach I tried over the years.

I wanted customers to call me.

So, like all the big players back in the 90s, I spent my meager ad budget on a Yellow Pages ad.

It was a small ad in the back because I couldn’t afford anything better, and I got precisely zero calls the entire year.

Then, one day I was introduced to this grumpy old guy whose work changed my life, Dan Kennedy.

I discovered the world of direct response marketing and I became obsessed.

Instead of constantly having to hunt for people who were interested in my services, I learned how to create offers that compelled prospects to raise their hands and produced a consistent pipeline of new customers.

Instead of having to be a hardcore closer, I learned how to create systems that did 90% of the selling on autopilot.

Instead of just hoping that my customers would call me when they needed my services again, I learned how to nurture my customers and ensure that they’d keep coming back over and over again.
